Reflections on Casting Crowns new CD "Thrive"
As many of you will know from my previous posts, God revealed the word "roots" to me for 2014, and I have been exploring this through what God has been doing in me and my family's lives at the moment. Well this month, whilst in a place where house moving stuff was going badly and I needed a little pick-me-up, I came across Casting Crowns new album - thrive. The cover immediately jumped out at me as a picture of a tree with its roots on show and I thought "I need to buy this album!".
Casting Crowns have a very particular sound, and I know it might not be to everyone's liking. Me and my husband go through phases of loving their albums and then getting bored of them. But I really do love the way that they weave scripture into their songs and challenge you at the same time. Each song on this album comes with the scripture next to it that it was inspired by. But this album is even better as all its songs have two main focus' that tie in with the image of a tree:
- Dig Deep - this is about establishing strong roots in the Lord and our relationship with him and getting to know him better. As the leader of the band says "This helps us understand who God is and who we are in Him."
- Reach out - this is about making God known to others. The leader of the band says "This helps us show the world that we belong to Jesus and that Jesus is God"
The main message of the album is that through doing these two things we will be able to have lives where we don't just survive from day to day, but we actually thrive (much like a tree that is planted in good soil next to a stream). The band is so passionate about the overall message of the album, rather than it just being songs, that it has launched a Thrive Challenge where each month they dig deeper into one of the songs with online teaching sessions and materials.
Here are a couple of my favourite lines from the new album to give you a taster:
"We know we were made for so much more than ordinary lives, its time for us to more than just survive, we were made to thrive"
"Your worlds not falling apart, its falling in to place. I'm on the throne, stop holding on and just be held."
So my advice would be, if you want an album that is easy listening then don't buy this. If you want to be challenged and encouraged to dig deeper into God and reach out farther into His world then buy this. I know that for the last few months of my life during this house move I have been just surviving, and this album spoke into my heart and has given me the desire to do more than that. I am going to pin up the poster that comes with the CD on my wall to remind me to THRIVE!
